Hello My name is Linda and I am another newbie. So glad I've found this forum as you all sound really friendly and knowledgeable. It's great to know that this support is available as most of my friends and relatives don't really understand RA and the problems it can cause. Just started on MTX and Sulfasalazine - so far so good but it's early days! My query may sound really superficial and vain but am wondering whether I will still be able to colour my hair in future? I understand that one of the side effects of MTX is minor hair loss so will have to see if I am affected but I have a permanent colour put on at the hairdressers every 8 weeks and my next appointment is in a couple of weeks. Will ask my rheumy nurse for advice but would be grateful if any of you have had any adverse effects from the hair dye? Sorry if this is a silly query when I know there are far more worrying symptoms to think about but if I have to go grey now it will affect my confidence. Any advice or comment would be really appreciated!

Happy Easter to everyone.Smile

Hi Linda and welcome to the forum!

You will find lots of help here and also that no problem is too trivial- if it bothers you, it probably bothers someone else too!

I have been on MXT for 10+ years and have also been on sulphasalazine, and regularly have my hair dyed at the hairdressers. I have never tried the DIY type so can't speak for that type but can honestly say I have never had a problem in using them.
I think it would be sensible to mention it to your rheumy nurse and also to the hairdresser but think they would agree it should be fine to go ahead. Anything you can do to boost your self confidence is ThumpUp vital

Hi Julie

Many thanks for your quick reply. It's reassuring to know that you've not experienced any problems. I will speak to the nurse and my hairdresser and guess I should take a skin test first if I decide to continue with the hair dye. Otherwise I expect I will have to research non chemical hair colours. Thanks again.

Hello Linda- welcome to the forum.

I'm on both these drugs- have been for 6 yrs. I have my hair dyed (permanent) at the hairdressers about every 2-3 months and have had no adverse effects at all. I hope it will be the same for you. Having this treat helps me to cope with having RA.

Take care

Maria

Hi Linda - nice to meet you. I used home dyes until 2 years ago. Don't know if it was due to meds or just build up of colour but it never seemed to be as nice as it had pre-meds. I bit the bullet and am now the proud owner of a grey bob which I accentuate with a lavendar conditioner. I thought I wouldn't like being grey but it's quite a relief as my roots started to show after about 10 days and I hated that.

Hope you get some advice from the nurse xx Ailsa

Hi to your all

Thanks for your comments - much appreciated. I suppose it's not the end of the world if I have to go grey but I would like to postpone it as far as possible! I will let you know how I get on.

Bye for now

Hi Linda from one newbie to the forum to another.
I have been on mtx for over three years plus a variety of other meds. I now have ribitxumub infusions and methotrexate, plus tramadol, and have my hair coloured with no problems. I used to do it myself from a box but the old shoulders ache too much now. At least I still have control over my hair if not the rest of my body.
Enjoy a trip to the hairdressers and come out feeling normal.
Take care

Hi , I was on MTX and coloured my hair with no adverse effects , it's not superficial , one of the worst things for me is the change in my appearance , not enjoying my hamster face and weight gain , so depressing , not a particularly vain person either ! x

Hi Linda

I have been on various drugs for 13 years now, and have my hair coloured at the hairdressers every 7 weeks or so and have had no adverse effects.

It is not a trivial thing, if it makes you feel better about yourself, it is important. I know it always makes me feel better when I come out.

Best wishes
Lisa

Hi Linda,

No problems for me either - I've coloured my hair for years and years without any adverse effects.
A girls got to feel good about herself - RA certainly doesn't help you do that, but your hair will go along way
to helping you.
